The number font on my 2011 Road King Classic had yellowed. Badly. Previous owner had left the bike in a field to rot, so the Sun did its thing. I Bought the bike (cheap) as a restoration project. Its coming along. I found a Softail gauge on ebay in mint condition but the mileage on its odometer and the mileage on my original RKC odometer don't match. Question is, do I need the Dealer to recalibrate the Softail odometer to match what I have on the original? Or, is the mileage stored in the ECM and the odometer shows that? Thanks in advance
As far as I am aware, the old speedometer is married to the original VIN and cannot be recalibrated. You can buy a new one where there is a procedure (and I believe a cable) to calibrate the mileage recorded in the ECM to the new speedometer. I do not believe even the dealers have a way to match the mileage to an old speedometer due to the possibility of fraud. There might be a way for you to have the old speedometer faceplate replaced or "refreshed", though.
I talked to Jim @ GaugeModZ and he said he could swap out the face plates at the same time he does the LED mods to my OEM Road King speedo. So I can go that route
I've changed a speedo using a drill motor and a cable to set the mileage straight on a bike I used to have . Depends how far you have to go if its worth it.
