Alright so my speedo/odometer on my RK stopped working last week and this also drained the battery. The dealership wouldnt tow it so my insurance did. So after several phone calls four days later they tell me its a faulty speedometer and the part is on order. So the question is will the bike now be mileage unknown? Is there some kind of legal thing with that? Any input would be greatly appreciated thank you
Several years ago there were concerns that used car dealers were rolling back odometers before selling the vehicle. Currently there are regulations in place that require dealers to re-set replacement speedometers to as near to original mileage reading as possible in the event the speedometer needed replacing. I don't know if the same requirement applies to motorcycles. I'm fairly sure you will get a new speedometer with current miles on it.
I had the speedometer on a 2004 Ford F150 replaced and the new replacement was installed with the same mileage reading that was on the original.

+1 on that. I had one replaced and HD replaced it with my mileage on it.
Yep. I swapped out the gauges on my Ultra for Street Glide gauges. I bought a new speedometer from HD that they programmed with the correct mileage. It's a one-time shot though.
It's interesting that in Illinois there is no requirement for Odometer Certification on Motorcycles so, when you buy a bike, there is no "official" guarantee that the mileage is correct.
Just last week, a friend of mine had his speedo stop working on his Superglide. Surprise, surprise--- the battery went dead. He needed a new voltage regulator.
Thanks all, my concern is that there was no way of recording or capturing the mileage before it failed so that it can be set with proper mileage at the factory
My speedometer stopped working. I checked the vehicle speed sensor which was ok. Also checked the voltage which was low with the engine running. Replaced faulty voltage regulator and speedometer functioned as it should. Check your voltage with the engine running should be around 13.8
I was just talking to my dealer last week about a new combo speedometer / tachometer. They said that they order the new speedo with the miles from the bikes computer.
