I'am changing the speedometer on a 96 FXDWG. The orig,s led went out. I want to change to a newer models speedometer using a Drag Spec, adapter harness. Question; is the mileage on this bike stored somewhere, ecm maybe? Or will I have to use what mileage is on the replacement speedo, or is it like the newer models that you can download the miles to the new speedo. Thanks!

Your original speedometer is electronic.
Illumination is replaceable.
I will guess you do not mean the illumination but mean the ODOMETER LCD screen is bad.
The silver/grey screen with black numbers for odometer.
The mileage is stored in the speedometer unit and not the ECM.
A replacement speedometer will display whatever mileage is in the replacement... if new then "0", if purchased used then whatever is in the replacement unit.
A speedometer shop should be able to pulse your replacement speedometer to display the mileage on old unit and also provide papers if required.
To be clearer: you can not transfer mileage easily.
