Default Fairing power socket(cigarette lighter) failure

Hi folks,
I have a 2010 Electra Glide Ultra Classic. The single power socket/outlet(cigarette light socket?) on the left side has gone dead. I use it mainly for a garmin gps but had wanted to use a usb insert for my phone. I went to the fuse panel and ohmed out the fuses, all good. I can't get test leads for a voltmeter to see if there is power. I have tried other plugs to make sure it wasn't the gps failure. I do see a minimal amount of corrosion on the inside since it is not covered. Do I have to remove the fairing to access the socket? Or can it be pulled out from the inner fairing? And lastly, if I do take off the fairing, what is a good replacement for that socket?
Thanks.

I replaced the lighter on my Street Glide with a USB port.... do a google search and you will find these lighter replacement ports. Mine is dual port, fit into the lighter space and has a cover to protect from weather. Works with switch on and no power when off. It probably took me 20-30 minutes to pull the fairing, replace the lighter with the port, and put back together. I would suspect that your exposed lighter probably has corrosion down in the bottom of it..... I would look into this replacement. Especially if you are using it for charging.

found this... just one example.... https://www.walmart.com/ip/12V-Porta...pter/793015340

Mine stopped working. It had a bit of rust/corrosion inside the socket. Cleaned it out with a copper fitting brush while still in the fairing. Been working since.

By USB insert i guess you mean a plug-in device that converts your cigarette power plug to USB port.
It would be best to remove fuses from motorcycle and visually review.
Then test for continuity one by one. If testing fuses while installed the possibility exist for electrical current feed back.
Did you check fuse on Garmin cord?
I do not understand these statements:
"I can't get test leads for a voltmeter to see if there is power" ....does this mean you do not have leads or you do not know how to test socket?..you can place a lead inside a piece of rubber hose, tube or tape to touch the (+) at bottom of outlet and the other lead to touch outside metal edge of outlet...a simple test light can be purchased or made too.
"I have tried other plugs to make sure it wasn't the gps failure"...does this mean you took a plug-in device that is known to function and attempted connecting while motorcycle was running?
If you did check with another known device..did that device work in another vehicle after?.
From a distance and based on information available it sounds like a blown fuse unless the ground wire disconnected at rear of socket but then you could check that by touching positive at socket center bottom and getting negative/ground from bare metal frame part..

Pull fuse and scrub it with some W-D 40 to get that corrosion out.

When or if you pull it off to clean check or what ever. Replace the cover with this rubber cover that will be water proof. It is a accessory cover used on the police bikes. H-D Part # 91844-97 and is the cheapest thing you probably ever buy from Harley at .99¢ the last time I purchased a bunch. I buy many and hand them to friends for there fairings.

Thanks for replying.
  • I meant that I couldn't get the test leads into the socket to test for 12vdc. Good suggestion
  • I had tried other plug-in devices that I knew are fuctional, and also tried GPS in my car to verify it's operation, good.
I will try to insert the (+) lead into socket, then ground (-) lead to bike. Also rechecking my fuses. Is there an inline fuse at the socket besides the 15a fuse at the panel?
Thanks

Default Power socket fuse issue

Hey all, I have a 13 FLHX and my power outlet isn’t working. Checked the fuse and there isn’t one. I popped one in and it will not stay in the fuse block, it’s like it is missing the metal clip that would hold in the fuse. Any recommendations on how to remedy this?

Look about 6'' back from your headlight plug and there should be an orange wire with a white stripe( positive ) and a black wire ( negative ), both should have blade type connectors already on them. These are switched power( headlight on= power, headlight off= no juice ). Use these wires to power your outlet...

This is the cure. Mine used to blow fuses constantly while powering a GPS unit off the cigarette lighter. I have not had a single issue since I rewired it this way.
