It's something else besides the CKP. What codes are reading out.

My 2001 is on third coil and ckp.

Make sure the pins mated good on Deutsch connector. It is easy to screw up.
Do you know for sure ckp? You can measure ac volts out of it,but it will read high if plugs out.

IF you used alphabet we would know if carb or fuel injected. I believe FLHR was carb, it was somewhat of base model cheaper bike.

not throwing codes.. I suspect a MAP sensor as it is sluggish and goes through fuel quickly when it dies start.

Is it back firing from unburnt fuel?

It is a 20 year old bike. I am not sure it's the map. But for $75 you could change a 20 year old part And have a new part .

it does... not as often as it did before I rebuilt the carb, but it does from time to time. And yes, for such a low price, that makes sense too.. same logic when I replaced the coils as well. My coils were ok when I tested it after replacing it (but lower on the meter than I'd like) so I figured I won't have to worry about that for another 20 years. Lol!

That's fair, carb was rebuilt and it ran fine. This happened after changing the ckp... unrelated I know, just giving a time frame.

So carb rebuild, then bike kept stalling, changed ckp, bike stopped stalling l, no problems for a while, but fuel mileage and backfiring started to appear, then it intermittently starts or doesnt.
