Kinda' surprizing that with all the "experts" on this forum that were "100% certain" that the clatter was caused by this or that, no one ever suggested a fix like the IDS! Not bashing, in fact I thought I knew what caused the clatter too. I think I will put one of those on my Christmas list.

Isolated Drive System Sprocket Kit

Introduced on the '08 Touring models, the Isolated Drive System improves rider comfort and ride quality by dampening the mechanical noise and vibration caused by the engine's torque pulses. The rubber compensation elements in the sprocket act like a cushion, absorbing the power pulses from the engine. With the IDS installed, the motorcycle feels more refined, and is quieter while accelerating, shifting and cruising. Kit includes sprocket, compensator bowl, and installation hardware.

All this does is prove it was the compensator all along... now with IDS, there's a compensator for the compensator...

Default RE: IDS installed.

I have been riding Harley Davidson motorcycles going on 20 years. All of my bikes have been in the FXR and Dyna families. I changed over to a 2007 FLHRC from a 2006 DWGI in January because of age / needing a more comfortable ride. Like a lot of people on the forum my bike ran hot, shakes, vibrates, rattles and knocks – HD traits. Coming from the 2006 Dyna Wide Glide I knew what to do with the heat/lean condition. It was immediately remedied after a 1000 mile break-in. The clattering noise was something I was not accustom to on my other bikes. The noise was irritating and I complained to the HD dealer. Like many others on the forum I was told it was normal. I tried using heavier transmission fluids with little to no success. Lately I’ve been reading about the new Isolated Drive System (IDS) with growing interest. I had a rear tire flat this week and decided while the tire was off to have the IDS installed. I search around Dallas and found an IDS Sprocket kit in Mesquite. I could not get my local dealer to install it. To make a long story shorter, I installed the kit myself. It is not a very big deal other than getting the bearing pressed into the drive sprocket. With all the running around, getting tire mounted it took me about 4 hours to complete. Having to remove both muffles was a hassle. As other people have said, the clattering noise is gone, 5th gear whine is reduced (you have to really listen for it) and over all performance seems to be smoother. I know that HD should step-up and fixed this problem on the 2007 touring models as a warranty issue. However, having been around them for 20 years I knew the score and bit the bullet. The most important part is to read the directions, have the service manual. I recommend this enhancement!

It looks like the Cush-Drive on all Jap bikes.
