backfiring harley when decelerating
Hey everyone - great site! great info!
I just bought my first harley... 2006 Ultra fuel injected w/ 2200 miles on it.
It has what i think are sampson pipes...... How do i tell if there is a pcIII installed? the bike backfires slightly and frequently when downshifting or letting off the gas..... .what do you think the problem could be? I will be taking it in for the 5000 mile service in the next 2 or 3 weeks i'm sure

Remove the right side cover. The PCIII willl likely be attached to the factory PCM with tie-straps.
If nothing is there (besides the factory PCM), the bika MAY have the HD download. I believe the dealer can use their scan tool to tell you if it has the download.

Oh, and a little popping when you decelerate is not going to harm the bike. If you get any serious backfiring, you may have a problem. Many people here will tell you that their bikes pop a bit on decel, mine does right around 2000 rpms. You can worry yourself about it, buy a PCII (or try tuning yours, if it has one), or not worry about it and ride your bike. I did the latter.
Very common issue with fuel injected HD's. All will do this on occasion, regardless of ECU enhancement. Tech2 is correct...look undr that right sidecover and it will be apparent immediately if the PCIIIusb is installed.
Your HD tech can tell you if you have any downloads in your ECU. Running too lean is a detrimental condition.....and can be solved in many ways......PCIII, Race Tuner, Race Fueler, etc. etc.
Research!

I was told to check my exhaust system (Rinehart TD's)for a leak. A leak in the exhaust system is also a common cause. I will post it when I actually have the time to bring my bike in for it's service and have it checked. Working to many hours at this time to follow up unfortunately.
When I changed my pipes, I had some popping initially. Reseated the slip ons using some anti-seize compound and it greatly reduced it, but not totally.
