06 Ultra Issues
I have a 06 Ultra with about 1500 miles on it. So far, the bike is wonderful to ride, but I have questions about a couple of issues.
1. The engine knocks/pings a little bit when accelerating from a stop. Now I accelerate pretty smoothly - no high RPM stuff, just a slow, easy take-off. I use premium octane gas, and I'm still using the regular HD oils from the 1K service.
2. I know these things run hot, but when I ride around in 50 degree weather, I don't expect the thing to heat up quite as much as it does. Is there anything that can be done about this?
From reading the forums, it seems as though the stage 1 upgrade is probably the solution I'm looking for. If I put on some slip-ons, get the stage 1 kit, and get the downloads done, will this help the problems? I'm not looking for any increased performance, just a bike that runs the way it should. The download question still concerns me - I have absolutely no need for a PC or SERT, and yet those seem to be the recommended solutions. Isn't there some way to get the stage 1 installed and tuned correctly without spending another $3-400 for a EFI programmer? It's a rather sad fact that that it seems to cost at least an additional $1K to get a $25K mototcycle running the way it should. At least HD could have told me about it so I could've rolled the cost into the loan.
Thanks in advance for your help...

Not sure if the Ultra has it or not, but maybe an oil cooler? Thermostat? to help with the heating problem.
To get the most for your money a dyno tune is the way to go. Not ALL bikes are the same no matter what.

you will not be happy with just a download, waste of money. If you want your bike to be at its absolute best get a pcIII and get it tuned on a dyno by a pro. Money very well spent and you will enjoy your bike that much more. Have an 06 and am more than happy!!
Bounty Hunter is correct, the download is crap. I like the Harley Race Tuner better than the PCIII but that is a personal opinion. You don't need an oil cooler on your bike unless you live in the desert. The twin cam runs hot. That's the way it's designed. The lowers hold alot of heat in so if it's too hot for you you can remove them. I keep my lowers on year round with no problems. Get some good pipes, do the stage 1 air cleaner upgrade and put on a race tuner or PCIII and have it tuned by someone you trust. The EPA has screwed with HD bad this year so it takes a little more to get them to run the way you want them too.

Congrats on your new ride.
On my 06 Road King Classic, I was having "issues".
Took her back to the dealer and was told that their are problems with the injectors in the FLH models only.
My injectors were replaced and the bike runs great!!!!
Went out for a little putt sunday, temps in the high 30, froze my ***, but still had a great time.
That being said, going out today to see about a dyno tune and a SERT

I have the same problem. I ordered a PCIII and see if that helps. The closest dyno is 1 hour away. I will try it with a map frin the dynojet site first. Many have said that the PCIII or SERT would fix the problem. I got a PCIII for $285. The SERT was $500 and someting. I will see what happens.

I feel your pain. I have a similar situation with my SG. I don't know what to purchase. I know that I need at least SE slip-ons and the stage I A/C but I don't know if I should get HD's Stage II download suggested by my dealer or purchase a PCIII or SERT. I am interested in seeing what the majority recommends.
Consider using a Synthetice oil (AMSOIL, Mobile 1, etc.). That should correct your engine heat issue. Also, the pcIII is a must along with the intake upgrade & dyno tune. Dude... you got a great bike! With just a few mods, you will be very pleased!
Before you get upset about it heating up, do the stage I (A/C and pipes whichever tickles yer fancy) get teh SERT or the PCIIIr and get teh bike tuned right,
if it is running lean from teh factory (usually is) it will cool off some once the fuel/air mixture is correct. Twin cams do tend to run hot though..
