I have been told it really does not reduce the engine temp. It is mainly for the comfort of the rider.
Of course shutting down one cylinder reduces engine temperature (temporarily) - but I think that the vibration as it starts up again would be slightly unnerving.
The IDS is the mod that increases rider comfort - and all the other wonderful things previously described....
The heat managemant download does work, and it isn't all that noticeable when the rear cylinder kicks in & out.
Whathappens is the fuel and spark to the rear cylinder are shut off via the ECM when the temp reaches a certain point and the engine is at idle- like in a traffic jam on a hot day. With the cylinder not firing it is producing no heat, soengineheat is reduced. That cylinderalsoacts like a big air pump- sucking in cool air & pumping out hot air, further cooling the engine. At the same time, the mixture to the front cylinder is richened- which also aids in cooling. Hit the throttle and the ECM turns the fuel & spark on to the rear cylinder again and off you go.
I haven't had the d/l done on my bike yet, but I've ridden two bikes that have.
I plan to have it done on mine soon as I get around to it...
Is this something specific to the new models. Mine 04 Road King just doesn't get that damn hot.
Jeff
Pre '07's had less displacement, lower compression ratio, and different fuel mapping in the ECM than '07 & later models, thus less heat.
I could see a different fuel mapping being the problem but I ain't buying the displacement. To many big boar and big motor guys out there not having the same problem. Just another good reason for me to stay away from the 07 and 08s out there.
