Omc.sgf - Lots of opinions on oil, and I don't want to step on others toes, but I ran Syn3 for 5 years in my Dyna, and recently switched to Syn3 in my 08 Ultra, mostly because I am having the shop do my first few fluid changes. At some point in the future I may change to a different brand, but I challenge anyone to show proof of engine damage caused by Syn3. It might not be the best, but it is more than "good enough".
Getting your 1k service and converting to a synthetic oil will provide some cooling. Things are generally quieter with the syn oil, yes even HD's syn3. It works just fine. Any name brand oil is going to do a good job. Some may be a little better than others. Just change them when you're supposed to and you'll (probably) never have a problem. Making the stage 1 changes will lower the temp even more. Bite the bullet (a little over $1k, gulp) and you'll be even happier with the new bike.

Thanks guys...
OregonRoadKing,
A little off topic here, but I notice you have V&H 2into1. I take delivery in a couple of weeks and am considering the V&H 2into1 ProPipe BP. Is that what you have? Happy with them? TIA. OMC-SGF
CKinAZ posted this link on another thread just a few days ago, which is the most comprehensive oil study I've seen, full of what the tests are, and how oils rated, and the only one I've seen that actually tested the Syn3.
After reading it, I'm much more comfortable in the Syn3 that is used by my dealer under their prepaid service plan. There are a couple of categories where it scored higher than Amsoil or Mobil 1, including acid neutralizing properties and cleanliness, and viscosity stability, and scored equally in rust prevention and gear wear.
The graphs can be misleading. If you look at the actual numbers, there isn't a lot of difference between the top performers in each category and the lower performers.
Use a synthetic, change the oil regularly are the two most important things you can do.
There are numerous studies and results comparing Syn 3 to other oils (ie Amsoil, Mobil1, etc.) The issue here is not about oil damaging engines, but about oil "protecting" engines from heat and premature wear. I remember letting the dealer put that crap in my RG for free, and it ran like crap! I am now an Amsoil faithful and have had nothing but good luck with it. Of course this debate will go on, but for me, Amsoil has proven its worth and protection properties. Thus, it is a TRUE synthetic oil!

I'm coming up on my 10k and will be doing most of it myself. I've been running plain HD oil and changing at 3K intervals. The fellow who did mylast oil change(independent shop) said that I might not want to change to synthetic now that I've gone 10K (he seemed to indicate that if I were going to change, I should have done so long before my 10K).
I've no experience with synthetics, but I had intended to switch.Would it really a bad idea at this point?
