Default IDS install

Man, I put the IDS on the other day and rode it and it had a vibration that was not there before.. Could feel it in the footboards..Called about it, asked for help here about it. Said it could be the belt or whatever. Boggled me..Took it back apart and luckily noticed that the little rubber bumper that the caliper has on it was bound up against the swingarm instead of below the bracket it is supposed to ride.. The caliper rests on top of the welded piece and the rubber gromet is below.. When I put the brake back on the gromet got wedged up.I reckon it made the brake push over slightly and made it wobble. Was just going to let you know to watch that. Even the second time I was putting it together it wanted to wedge up where it was not supposed to be. Might be useful to someone..............

Your warning is why this forum is such a valuable asset. When I first read it I had no idea what you were talking about, and only after careful scrutiny did I discover mine was distorted in the same way. I was feeling no vibration or other behavior that would indicate a problem, and I'm not sure how serious the misplacement of the bumper really is. It may not really matter, but I would imagine it would distort the caliper's alignment enough to cause uneven pad wear, although I didn't see any on mine. Oddly, the service manual made absolutely no mention of this potential problem, nor are there any warnings to check its position before installing the caliper into place, saying only "Seat caliper on weldment anchor of rear swingarm." This message needs more exposure and I'm surprised more of us aren't chiming in and admitting we made the same error, as this bumper looks like it is ripe for such a misplacement any time the caliper is removed. Anyway, I removed my wheel this morning and put things back the way they should be. The bumper didn't seem damaged so I re-used it.

Somewhere on an IDS thread sometime back I posted a list of procedures for removing the rear wheel, and I'll go find that and add a comment about this. Thanks for your heads up. Redhill, you might edit your subject to something like "IDS install warning" so more people see it.

Acedantinne, I just read your earlier note but missed it last week when you wrote it. It seems this may be a common problem and it's obvious that everyone who's done an IDS install, or removed the wheel for any reason, needs to check it. Get a flashlight and look under the bike where the caliper housing fits under the "weldment anchor" on the swingarm. On the inside of the caliper housing pointing toward the wheel you'll see a thin rubber strand maybe 3/4" long. Look toward the outside of the bike along the axis of this strand and you'll see an indentation in the caliper housing, and this bumper should be visible between the caliper and weldment anchor. If not, look above the swingarm and see if you see it protruding in that location. If it is not in its groove below the swingarm anchor it is not positioned right.

Redhill, I wanted to get back sooner on your problem. Sorry I was sick. Lymes, Tick bite.
Anyhow, Person from this site took me up and borrow my tools installed his own and friends IDS. His bike had a slight noise and a vibration when riding. What We found after looking bike over was a very simple BUT important part had moved out of place. There is a rubber damper on the rear brake caliper. It slides on the rear swing arm weld aligment.Putting the caliperback on it got missed aligned. More like pushed out of way. Replaced with new. Applied a slight amount of Sil-Glyde. Makes easy too install.
His problem fixed.
Hope this helps.

Anybody have a picture? If I print this out and go look at the bike should I be able to figure out what is wrong or right?
Thanks for the warning, the way things go I figure mine is going to be messed up as well.

Wow. I'm glad this came up. I didn't have any vibration at speed, but did notice some shudder during low speed decel that wasn't there before the IDS install.
I'll check this when I get home from AK in Dec.
Thanks guys!

I agree Redhill. Many may miss your very important messageand as others point out, it's important for reasons beyondIDS. Great job finding, fixing, and warning us. Thanks.

I'll get a shot of it from underneath and post here later on, showing the bumper in its proper place. I'll bet that most people are going to be affected, too, as this freakin' rubber bumper does not fall into its proper place without a concerted effort to make it do so--or at least mine didn't this morning. This is not only poor engineering but there should be some warning in the service manual about it, in which case I might overlook the engineering flaw. My old Evo was much easier to remove and re-install the rear wheel, without futzing with mufflers and rubber bumpers. So goes the parade of progress.
