There are at least 3 SE slipons for touring bikes: the street legal SE's and the Touring mufflers (which are both listed in the regular accessories book, and the SE Pro's (formally known as SE II's) which are not street legal and are only in the SE race catalog. IMHO, the street SE's are not much to write home about in either performance or sound. The SE Pro's (which I have) are very low restriction, are fairly quiet at idle & cruise and really come to life when you get on it. They have a pretty low, throaty tone, les raspy than the V&H's or Cycle Shacks. When you nail it to pass somebody they are definitely going to know you're comin' around. I love em :-) I believe they also do not have any packing to have to replace - metal baffles only. The V&H ovals look fantastic, but have the typical V&H edge to the sound. They would probably sound great if the V&H quiet baffles would fit.
As a previous poster suggested, the S&S mufflers are probably the best performing quiet option.
I practically gave away my SE2's due to excessive noise. Funny thing happened - when I put the stock mufflers back on, I noticed a distinct INCREASE (notice the word, 'INCREASE') in LOW END TORQUE (the RK acted like it had a new engine). I had used the SE2's since new and put about 7K on them - never tried the stock mufflers. Now, you couldn't give me a set of LOUD mufflers. Guess I want people to notice perhaps the shiney chrome, bright lights, handsome driver (), but, the noise can take a long hike! I agree that less restrictive exhaust CAN produce more power, but, only at elevated RPM's. I keep my rpm's between 2 and 3 K (that's one of HD's strong points) - and I doubt if I ever used the part of the power curve that the SE2's enhanced. Besides, I kind of like the deep sound of the stock mufflers - plus, I get 50 mpg instead of the 42 mpg the SE2's gave me (along with the PCIII). Just my 2 cents worth - happy new year everyone, btw!!
