If I remember correctly, you use soapy water which allows you some wiggle room. As for a clear coat, my body man said it would be difficult at best to do. He explained why but I have forgotten the gist of it. The downside is that when you wash the decal, you do feel the edges so you have to be careful not to roll the edges.
