I have an 05 Ultra. I was wondering with the proper maintanence, how many miles could I expect to get out of a Twin Cam 88 motor? Can anyone tell the most miles they have gotten out of a Twin Cam 88 motor?
My friend has a 97 heritage soft tail with 96k on it never had any work done besides basic maintenance and its still running strong. So I guess they have the potential of a good long life span.
Ok, maybe not, but I did just get a newsletter from one of our local dealers that talks about the cam chain tensioners, and they did recommend getting them checked and replaced after 20K miles or even replaced with the gear drive stuff from S&S.
They say they'll replace the tensioners and bearings for $300 (doesn't sound too bad), but I think in spite of the noise, the gear driven may be the way to go....
Other than that, not sure why the motor wouldn't last a long time unless you ride in extreme heat and traffic for a long time.
Simple motor, well-proven. It just ain't a race engine meant for 120 mph trips across the Mojave...
Have a friend that has a 03 ultra, put 167,000 on it and just had to have it remaned for some problem, HD covered under warranty and it only cost him $50 Proper maint. you'll be good to go.
you mean that you arent supposed to hot rod them...[sm=bustedsign.gif][sm=devilangel.gif]i do the maintenance as scheduled but also have a tendency to hot dog it a little as well. like my oldest daughter says if they didnt want you to drive it that fast why do they give you that much throttle..?
Last year, there was a story about a guy that went 126,000 in one year on a new bagger.....either in Hogtales or Enthusiast....and all he had was normal service.....a lot of them.
