IDS Bearing failure
Hopefully I am the only one having this problem. Bought an IDS for my 07 RG about 6 mo ago 6000mi, all was fine, works great...Then....yesterday I pulled the rear wheel to replace the tire and the IDS bearing came out in shattered pieces...WTF!!! so I calmed down and got on the phone to NAPA and no such animal, MOCO only, so I called around and of course no local dealers stock one or ever heard of one failing sooooo I order go ahead and tell my local to get me one and he says week to 10 days special order.....Weather has been so great lately (No Calif) I really don't wanna be down for weeks. Maybe I'll just put it back to stock and forget the IDS till next tire change.....Ok Rant over
I had one go on my new 08 Ultra at 5k.Warranty item.Harley should replace it,but will they?Call your person that you bought it from to see if they can help you out.Regards,Tom ps:If you ride the bike with the bearing it will make a horrible noise, then it gets worse.Good Luck
Got a number on the bearing? Try another bearing supplier. NAPA is good, but there are others that specialize in bearings. Someone makes 'em..................
I hate that this happened to you, but I sure hope it is an isolated case. The idea of going 75mph, loaded 2-up with the precious wife and this bearing grenading on my scoot is not one I'm too fond of.
Maybe the bearing was not pressed in all the way and immenent disaster was inevitable, or maybe someone generated too much pressure when pressing and the race or bearing developed a hairline crack that took this long to become evident.
Whatever the case, glad you did not get hurt, hope it is isolated, and I DANG sure hope I never experience this.
FWIW, there is a new Service Document being sent to the HD Service Depts that notify all service personnel to increase the torque on the 6 bolts on the IDS compensating bowl from 60lbs to 80lbs effective immediately.

Who installed bearing and how?
Who installed bearing and how?
While this isn't good news by any means, I wonder what the worst that can happen is? The way I understand the IDS assembly is that the axle is still supported by both wheels bearings and the inner spacer, the pulley is bolted directly to the hub, so beyond a bunch of noise what could happen? I know anything is possible, and I don't mean to minimize the problem, but I don't think the rear wheel locking up and causing an accident is very likely.
Am I completely off base on my understanding of the IDS construction?

I installed the bearing myself using a hot sprocket and a cold bearing method, and also used a hand operated arbor press, went in very smooth and bottomed out nicely...I am somewhatpicky so thats why I do all I can myself. Been wrenching HDs for 40+ yrs so not exactly a novice. This is a very odd bearing, has 2 inner races, one at wheel speed in relation to sprocket and one at swing arm speed. Part # is HD40670-06. 17.50 at Zannottis.....Backordered!!!
