I installed the bearing myself using a hot sprocket and a cold bearing method, and also used a hand operated arbor press, went in very smooth and bottomed out nicely...I am somewhatpicky so thats why I do all I can myself. Been wrenching HDs for 40+ yrs so not exactly a novice. This is a very odd bearing, has 2 inner races, one at wheel speed in relation to sprocket and one at swing arm speed. Part # is HD40670-06. 17.50 at Zannottis.....Backordered!!!
It sounds like we should all buy a spare to have on hand. I wonder if you can check the bearing's health without removing the wheel, like by shaking the pulley or something.
By the way, heard no noises or had no idea there was a problem till I removed the rear wheel for a new tire, Outer race was in pieces...Installed the original sprocket for now, as I see it if this bearing fails completely, well thats all that supports the sprocket in relation to the wheel so if bearing is gone thew sprocket is just floating in air only supported by the rubber isolaters, so basically, you're on foot.....

I wonder if a leak in the seal could cause such a failure. Water would rust the race and *****, and you know the rest. Unlike wheel bearings, which AFAIK should be protected from moisture, this one is out in the open.
Hey Ultra, ordered one from Zannottis and have not rec'd confirm yet, thanks for your input...
Mosey on down to the local HD and pick one up, granted they have one in stock, but again, as it is right now these are not noted as backordered from HD themselves.
I hope Biggs Harley Davidson in San Marcos is close by where you live because that is the ONLY Harley dealership inHarley's network that denotes having one in stock in the Republic of Kalifornia.
Already put the original back on, after riding 6000 with the IDS I'll see if the difference is really worth it, you know what they say "keep it simple stupid" KISS, I'll live with a little rattle for now....
