I see you have an 08 so you will have heat management on that which will let you know when it starts getting too hot by idling down, turning off one cylinder, etc.

HD doesn't want you to know. They programed the heat management system into the ECM so that engines won't "burn up" during slow speed situations. It's sometimes called "parade mode."

Time will tell if a stock engine can make it to high mileage without serious engine problems from the heat. HD designed these motors to run hot on purpose to help them meet EPA standards. The high combustion chamber and exhaust temps help burn off the emissions. So, most of us modify our engines to run cooler for 3 reasons. 1. Engine runs better. 2. Engine may run more miles before needing a rebuild. And lastly 3. It's more comfortable to ride in hot weather especially at stop lights.

Just my 2 cents on the subject.

Keep moving and you'll be fine. Ride it in the wind. Don't sit and idle longer than a stoplight. Stay out of long parade lines or congested traffic, turn down a side street and get out of there.

At highway speeds it is impossible to overheat it as the air carries away the heat --if you can stand the air temp you are riding in, so can the bike.

Air cooled bike needs air across they jugs to cool, so ride it and you will be fine, sit still and it will get hot.

If you get bogged down in traffic, pull up under an over pass and have a cold beer (you do keep cold beers in your saddle bag, riight?

I can tell how hot mine is running by the size of the blister on my right thigh.

This has only happened twice, that I know of.
There's an eject mechanism hidden under the seat & if the temp gets to high, you will be ejected off the bike. So, you will have a pretty good idea when the bike is running to hot.

The first indication that the eject is about to engage is a grinding sound from the back of your bike.

. . . sorry Greg, couldn't help myself.
