I have a buddy who left his bike idling for a lot of hours (10 or so...) It's a long story as to why and how- but anyway it was turned off running and now it won't go again. He topped up the tank and checked for spark - there was none. Any notions as to why?
Wow. I can't even believe an air cooled bike would idle that long without self destructing. Hard to say what got messed up but I'll bet it's more than one problem.

Is there any way you could possibly give us any more information???
yup air-cooled Ultra and no word of a lie - at least ten hours - just in though, the bike has actually started and runs for a few seconds - then stalls out and puffs black smoke from the airfilter.
I have to ask why in the world did he leave it Idle so long???Did he go away and forget it or something? Is it fuel inj. or carb and has he changed the plugs???
year would be handy and so would fuel injection or carb
Must have been real cold out to idle that long with out excess
heat siezing up the engine.
starts and runs a few seconds huh?
Does the engine make any unusual noises as it is preparing to die?
Well first I would pull the plugs and get new ones,
Second I would do a compression test and a leakdown test.
Third I would pull aircleaner and inspect for any abnormality.
come back when you have more info.
I would presume the ECM could have gotten quite HOT, they don't like
extreme heat for prolong ed periods. But when they fail it is usually total
failure.
Puffs black smoke out breather, indicates excess fuel or oil coming out the intake
valve.
Oil would most likely mean damaged rings from the high heat of excessive idling
and as engine warms up again, the rings are failing to seal, but should see this on
plugs too. High heat damages the tension in the rings and they start collapsing.
fuel would indicate plugs not firing properly. High heat will damage the plug, burn
the electrodes.
