Default looking for some help

I have a 2007 Ultra Classic with over 17K miles on her, I've had the dealer do about half the maintenance, and fix anything I've had go wrong under my warrantee. I've had a regular problem with the cruise control not working, they adjust it and its good for a while... now it needs it again, but I want to fix it, so I don't have to get a $250 oil change.... Anybody know how to adjust or tighten the cruise control cables??? I'm also looking for a back rest, if anyone has one they want to get rid of. Of course they don't install the bracket at the factory, that would be just too easy....[/align]

no, I don't have a service manual.. 250 is the price out the door, I prefer to save some dough, and work on the bike myself.

You will hear this from everybody here, but take a bit of the $250 you are trying to save and get a manual. They are worth their weight in gold. Years ago, I was building a bike from the frame up and I asked my buddy to come over and help because he knew his stuff. He stopped by with a 12 pack and a service manual. Told me the manual was so I could learn and quit asking simple questions, the beer was for him to drink while he watched. I bitched about it until the first time I broke down on the road, then realized, no sweat, I know what's wrong and I know how to fix it. Now I understand, he did me a huge favor and gave me the confidence to go anywhere, any time. Now I have an '08 Road King, lots of new stuff for me, so when I'm sitting at the house and it's nasty outside, I pick it up and learn more every day. Sorry, I don't know about your cables, like I said, '08, TBW. Someone will probably answer your question here, but my advice is still, read the manual, over and over and over again.

He's tellin' you to go buy the service manual, & I'll suggest a parts manual to go with it. It'll pay for it's self at times like this.

Without knowing what kind of problem you're havin' with the cruise it's difficult to tell you how to fix it. Havin' the shop manual will give you most of the information to fix it yourself, or to at least describe the problem better here.

+ Infinity on the Service Manual--it will pay for itself on your first service that you do yourself.

+1 on the Parts Manual. I confess that I am a "Johnny come lately" to the Parts Manual since I only bought mine a week ago after owning my bike (and the SM's for it) for 3+years--better to get wisdom late than not at all.

As for the "cruise control not working" issue, there are several ways they don't work from the on/off switch not working, set/resume not working, etc.

If you can be more specific about the cruise control problem there may be help available here.
However, as it's a recurring problem on a bike that is still under warranty, have the dealer fix it RIGHT.

I don't care to go to the dealers, mainly because it's a 30 mile ride to either of the two closest ones, and I don't want to wait for a few hours unless I have too. I have better things to do with my time off. Thank you, (frog13) for the idea of getting a manual, I will heed this advice, it totally makes sence.... why get a parts manual when theres Google?

There is nothing wrong with the cruise switch, I believe the cables just need tightened. It seems whenever I work on any of my vehicles, if theres a hard way of doing things, I find it.

Two reasons.........1. Most dealer parts geeks can't find wheels in a motorcycle shop, so If you know the *correct* part number you save time & might actually get the part you want. 2. The parts manual has even better exploded views than the shop manual. Sometimes it makes disassembly/assembly a lot easier.
