I have a 95 Electra Glide and would like to eliminate the saddlebag 'guards' and just use the saddlebag support, like a lot of the newer baggers do. The supports are for 97 and up bikes but appear like they should work on my 95. Anyone know why, or has anyone ever used the supports on older bikes. How much revamping does it take. I hate to spend a couple hundred bucks on the supports if they won't work.
thanx for you responses in advance. any help would be appreciated.
You can either buy brackets that don't require the guard (some of the later model SG's had these I think) and eliminate them that way, or you can cut the guard tube and cap it like I did. Chrome caps were ~$1 each at Lowes.
Edited to add: if you decide to cut them just make sure your cuts are perpendicular to the tubes so thecaps will fit. Don't cut the tubes at an angle. Some tape across the area will help protect the remaining finish if the blade bounces around before it bites in.
You only need to take the rails off for the look, the support rails are attached seperately. The crash barswill have the holes left.Either find something to fill them or Ebay to get a different set without the holes.Good Luck
To smokindave - The HD supports are what I'd like to use. My question was....why do they say for use on '97' and up. My bike is a '95', and it "appears" the same, but obviously there is a difference. I was asking if anybody knew what the difference was or if anyone had made modifications to the HD ones to make them work on an older bike.
Not a bad looking bike dave.
In '97 the frame was all new. Newer bikes sit an inch lower at the front of the seat/back of the gas tank. I've got a set of what you're looking for, my '07 Roadglide came with the hiddens and I wanted to snap the accessory bags from my old '96 EG. I just can't be sure they're compatible, I'll have totrack down a buddy with an older bagger and measure. BTW, I have a Mustang Regal from that bike that needs a home. Interested? shoot me a PM. Also have the tool roll, tourpak mat.
