Default Security System Lamp indications

There is an item in the Do It Yourself section about checking the TSM/TSSM Trouble codes that I wish to use as a point of reference; it was originally placed there apparently by pilot1996. I recently started seeing the following behavior coming from the Security System indicator in the instrument cluster.

According to my understanding of the "start procedure", you wait until after the Engine and Security System lamps go out following turning on the ignition. Just the other day, for the first time, I noticed that the security system lamp came back on for several seconds after it had gone out. It didn't matter whether the bike was running, or had not yet been started; the security lamp came back on for about the same amount of time (roughly 8 to 10 seconds) then went back out again. The security system seems to be functioning correctly, and the bike runs without any other issues or indications.

The above referenced DIY post mentions that this is the behavior seen after a trouble code has been recorded by the engine management system. The same post tells how to troubleshoot this condition, and figure out what "current" or "historic" code is being stored by the system. Several codes are detailed in the post, with numbers ranging from 11 to 41; the various numbers meaning different things. When I ran the procedure detailed in the article, the code 44 was displayed. Unfortuantely, this code was not detailed in the artcle. (It was also interesting to note that the guy I spoke to at the dealership was even more clueless about the possible meaning of all this than was I.)

Does anyone on these forums have any idea what this is all about? BTW, this topic is in relation to my '05 Ultra Classic, with the factory installed security system (including siren).

Well my .02 worth of knowledge, I was having to same problem. From the same cheat sheet that you read, I thought it was a historic code. I fix the problem and cleared it. I haven't seen it since.

When I installed the PCIII on my 04 Ultra, it had the same problem. The light would come on 10 secs after the light out. happened both with the bike running and off. I called Dynojet and they told me it was from the engine not running and the PCIII looking for the engine to be running. When I picked the bike up from my 1000 mile service....the light is working fine and it has not happened since.

If you are running the PCIII then you might want to look in to that.

Good luck.

DTC 44 occurs when the TSM/TSSM detects a fault in the Lt GN/GY wire coming from the TSM/TSSM and into the Carb Or EFI harness.
Check along it for a short.....Possibly in the Carb/EFI harness also.

TCSTD,

I'll do some looking. Can I find the stuff you mention in the '05 Service Manual? And how do you come by all this information? Can this stuff be found in the seperate manual for the electrics, complete with the codes, etc? I know, too many questions...

Thanks for the leads you guys. It still astonishes me the dealer-folk were so clueless about such a seemingly common issue.
