Default Shocks

I am looking at getting a set of Progresive Suspension shocks 440 series. I would say I ride solo about 90% of the time. I am right at 200 lbs. Should I get the Heavy Duty or the normal rate springs ? Thanks........

I put the Progressive 440 hd on my 07 sg, they were 11.5 eye to eye, I weighed 195 at the time and even all the way up they road like crap, 2 up with the gal on they were awesome, but when I get the cash back, I'm going back to the standard.I did like the 11.5's though it was amazing how big a differance the 1/2' made with the buffeting, But everyones body's are different. Just my .02&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; T

You can call progressive and talk to them about it before you buy, I was 250 ish when I had my 97 RK and had the Heavy Duty models when I was solo they great, but I kept them on the softest setting.&nbsp\\; Any lightway guys like the mechanics road it was too stiff for them, bounced them around but good.&nbsp\\; You would probably be fine with the standard shock, and they adjust by hand so you can tighten them up when you do go 2 up.&nbsp\\; Can adjust them in the time it takes to take the bags on and off.
&nbsp\\;
They were a great shock and loved the way the bike handled.&nbsp\\; I have the HD lowprofiles on my 07 EGC and keep them up around 30 psi solo and I am happy with them so far.&nbsp\\;
&nbsp\\;
Just a word to someone who has never ridden with 440's the first time you hit a good bump and you hear the interenal IDS lock up it makes a loud click from the shocks...just means it's doing what it is supposed to and adjusting to the road you are on.&nbsp\\; You get used to it after awhile and it only does it when you hit a real big one.

You might consider the 12½", which is between the standard 13" and the HD low-profile 12" (standard on SG &amp\\; RKS). I have these with the standard springs and consider it an acceptable combo for my 170# of solo riding, even with a loaded Tour Pak. With 3½ turns of preload it is a good combo of ride and resistence to bottoming, although it will bottom on occasion, not nearly as harsh or frequent as the HD 12" shocks, though. I'm tempted to suggest that 200# riders might consider the HD springs, but that would probably be too stiff.&nbsp\\;

Since preload is infinite between the lowest and highest setting, i.e. no click stops, you can put it where you want it, and there should be a setting in there for heavier riders. When I mount a loaded Tour Pak I give it 1/2-turn more preload, which is about right, so I'm confident the standard springs would be good for up to maybe 225#, or whatever Progressive suggests. After living with these 12½" 440's for about a year I would suggest that you consider the 13" if you don't mind the higher sitting posture, as that will improve ride. Going to 12" is IMO going too low for good comfort, and that was supported by a Progressive rep I spoke with before buying these. He suggested the 12½" as a minimum, and the 13" if I didn't mind the higher stance. But if you don't take long rides and prioritize the low look, go with 12" or 12½". They also make an 11½", I think, which I'm sure would be far too low to be comfortable or practical.

Anyone know if Penske, or other quality maker does a softail shock setup? I now the softail configuration isn't very good, but, there still has to be a good maker of these... ('99 down hopefully)

Regards.

Like my LSU Tiger friend I went to 12/5 440s and think they are great!!&nbsp\\; I had 11.5 440s and sold them.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; The more travel the better.&nbsp\\;&nbsp\\; And the Progressive are MUCH better than the stock air shocks.
