Planning my first SS1000 in October, along with a coworker and his father-in-law. Had wanted to do this one http://www.cofreewheelers.org/1000-in-24.html but couldn't get the schedule right.

1035 miles in 18 hours, Be sure to do it when the weather is cool... I rode from the Annapolis, Md. area to Palm Beach, Fl... left out around 4 am and arrive at 10pm. 18 hours and felt good enough to keep on going... be sure to get signed out and signed in. getting the receipts along the way, were really the only pain in the "butt". got my certification in 3 weeks!!!

Due to a backlog 6 month turn around would have been quick this time last year.

A few of the guys I work with ride HD's, BMW's and other bikes. They have always talked about wanting to become Iron Butt members. So last August I rode from Southeastern Wisconsin to Billings Montanna solo. I clocked it at 1265 miles in under 18 hours. I had all my paperwork filled out for the Iron Butt association. It was pretty cool seeing a HD with the top honors for August last year. By the way I rode on the stock seat. My A$$ has never been the same!!!

Any trip I've taken that I went 800 to 1000 miles the first day and then 3-400 per day coming back worked out great. It works great just get a map out and see how far 1000 miles gets you from home then see whats at a point go there and then take a few easy days home I relax that way and still feel like I had a good ride when I get home

As dcc46 said, they are addicting. To your question about prepping the bike, all I did was load the routes in the zumo. Prep for the passenger - I let her stay home! She thinks I'm crazy.

I did my first ss1k last year with only 10 miles on the odo, picked up my new Ultra April 2nd at my hometown dealer and rode it to Toronto where I was working temporarily. Started the ride at 55* F, hit 80* in WVa, then crossed the border at Buffalo in blowing snow.

Then I saw the Great Lakes series of rides on the IBA site and did the Lake Huron 1k, followed by the Lower Lakes 1k (Ontario & Erie), and on to a bb1500k ride that took me to North Bay & Sudbury, Ontario.

Rode a ss2000k(kilometers - they offer kilometer rides for those in metric countries) 2 weeks ago to Hannover, Germany and back to Switzerland.

And just got back yesterday from a ss1600k/bb2500k from Switzerland to Lichtenstein, Czech Republic and Germany.

Can't stop riding....

Only things I added for comfort were the rider's backrest (don't leave home without it) and I had the stock seat reworked to put in gel and memory foam. Easier on my not-so-iron butt.....

Did my SS1000 on my '02 Ultra. Me and some friends (4) did it in 20 hours. Vegas to Wilcox, AZ and back. Would've been less time but one of my buds liked to take his time getting back in the saddle after fuel stops. had a great time. I am trying to plan a BB1500, Vegas - Salt Lake - Portland - Crescent City, CA. May have to wait till next year though, weather may become a factor if I can't plan it soon.

I just made sure I had an oil change and tires were good. Definately read the IBA site for tips, it was very helpful for us.
