I've done two "official" SS1000's and a couple other unofficail (just goota get there) rides that would qualify as well.
Read the tips on the IBA site ~ they are valuable. If you set out to do one on your own, see if you can come up with a route that goes generally west and retrurn to the east. That way, you are not riding the whole time the sun in you face. I suppose north & south would too.
Did just over 1000 this summer left at 5:15am had it done before dark .. in at about 9:00pm .. No butt soreness ... was confortable on the Ultra ... This may sound odd but my sides got cramped at a stop at about 800 miles twisted around to work it out and finished it from there
I did my first SS1000 on a '97 Dyna Wide Glide, no windshield. It is not that hard if you really want to do it. A year later my wife did 1,200 miles in 24 hrs as a passenger in the 2001 TarButt rally; but I can't get her to do it again. She is limiting me to 200 miles a day when we tour.
I have been looking at their website also. I'm thinking about doing one next year. My person best was this year coming home from Sturgis, 1233 miles in 17 hours, 15 minutes.
One of my buddies I ride with has done the Border to Border Insanity run. He said it's not too bad if you get your stop time down and don't screw around.
great information , very detailed thank you , my wife (passenger) and i are planning a ss1000 for the spring after we get or new sg or egc (we can't decide yet)and get a few miles on it
Did 2 SS1000's last year one was done within Indiana and the other was Wisconsin. You just have to build up your tolerance to distance. It also helps coodinating some interesting areas to ride through.
A week from tomorrow 4 of us will be attempting the
New England 1000........a predertimined route that
takes us from ME thru NH into VT, then south thru MA
and into CT, before heading into RI.
From there we will head north around Bah Stan and
back to ME.
Good luck on your trip. The most I've completed in a day was 508 miles. That was on my Sporty with a Rallyrunner seat and no windshield. I would imagine with the RK I could easily complete a 1000 mile ride in a day. Not sure if my wife would go for it but I might be able to get her to do it once.
Sounds like fun. Oh, to the guy who wouldn't register the long rides, it's not about conforming to some regulation created by a group but simply to test yourself while riding with others so you'll have more stories to talk about. Still fits nicely into the riding thing just with a different twist than other rides.
