I got a mailing from the local dealer about their winter storage package. It mentions applying some sort of protective coating before they put on the cover? Any idea what they are talking about, or suggestions about what to use and is it even worth doing?
Harley Preserve™ Bare Aluminum Protectant
Provides superior corrosion control to bare aluminum surfaces by forming a protective polymeric coating. The long-lasting coating is detergent and UV-resistant, and is easy to apply. The convenient dispensing container includes 20 disposable wipes. Does not harm H-DŽ approved paint.
A fan on low to keep the air moving in the garage will prevent any "sweating" that will cause rusty chrome parts and aluminum oxidation during winter storage.
I've stored bikes in my unheated garage for years and never had a problem. The only things I recommend are using a lift to keep the tires off the floor and laying a sheet of plywood over a sheet of insulation over the storage area. You should never store a bike directly on a concrete floor.
S-100 makes a similar product. I think the clean, dry concept works best for me. My bike is always up off the floor on the jack because I don't want flat spots on the bias ply tires. But I'm interested why the plywood and insulation, and what that does to help the storage? Bob Kikkert, any response?
