Default 2 thangs

1st why doesn't the motor company re-design the oil filter mount on big twins, so the oil filter empties out. That way we wouldn't spill oil everytime we have to remove the oil filter. 2ndly FRAM PH6065a does meet OEM but DOES NOT FIT a TWIN CAM 88 WITH OIL COOLER. The oil cooler mount plate between the oil filter and motor, pushed the filter razor close to the crank position sensor, and thus the filter wrench won't slide on to the filter. Lesson learned last night. The FRAM filter is just slightly longer than stock HD filter. I still got it to work, but a pain in the neck never the less.

Get one of those filter wrenches that slip just over the end of the filter and has that thingie on end that you turn with a wrench.

unless that thingy is paper thin it won't slide over the FRAM, paper thin space now between filter and sensor.

It's actually cut out completely on one side so it should fit.

i have the "specially designed Harley Oil Filter Tool" for big twins with the side cut out to compensate for the sensor location. But as small as the tiny ring is around the end of the tool its still to wide to fit between the FRAM filter and the sensor. Basically I had to put the filter on hand tight and retightened it when the blood flowed back into my fingertips. To reiterate "a pain in the neck"

Sorry Ken, TRVS is exactly right on the filter clearance. It is the same situation if you want to use a K&N filter. It is just a tad longer and literally touches the sensor. The HD filter socket, even with the cutout will not fit. I got so tired of taking the sensor out to change the filter I bought a Jagg offset mount. Much more better--any filter fits. - Tom

silly me...I just use the HD filter

I figure I'm going to order stuff from one of the discount places at least every few months or so...I just add a few oil filters to my order

I recall someone here..maybe pococj?...a long while back posted pics of how he modified his bike so that the filter was hanging straight down..it was cool

Harley, I wish I could have also. Maybe it's unique to the 02, but even the HD filter was too close. I could slip the wrench on and give it a partial twist, then it interfered. I was afraid ofdamaging the sensor by forcing it over, so I would just take it out first. PITA! - Tom

[QUOTE=TRVSDAD;4030794]1st why doesn't the motor company re-design the oil filter mount on big twins, so the oil filter empties out. That way we wouldn't spill oil everytime we have to remove the oil filter.

I put aluminium foil under the filter and funnel the foil into a drain pan. The I use a long punch and punch two holes in the end of the filter, one at the bottom and one at the top. Then I just let the filter drain for awhile. then I remove the filter without any mess. I have been doing it this way for years.

Thanks, I'll give that a try at the next change. I had been stuffing paper towels under the filter but some always leaked out or through them. I even tried using a freezer baggie around the filter as I unscrewed it. But still had some leakage.
