Turn the switch to the lock position. Insert the key and hold the button under the switch push down and turn the key counter clockwise.

SG nailed it. It will seem pretty simple once you get it. I was very careful not to move anything when I pulled mine because of the stories I'd read about not being able to get everything lined up. When it came time to reassemble it almost fell back together.

I noticed this month's issue of American Bagger showed and advertisement for a tool to realign the tumblers in the ignition....had a phone number, but not a price.

The long flat head screw driver works just as well.

Eddy, I made the suggestion only because my impression is that about 50% of the "help" posts are answered with information in the Service Manual. Also, unless you know how to remove the clutch cable and adjust it correctly when putting the bike back together, ditto the throttle and idle cables removal and reinstall, etc., you will benefit from the step-by-step instructions for inner fairing removal and installation in the SM--I know I did when I installed my painted inner fairing.

Good luck with your project.
