I have a 20003 electra glide classicwith a whine noise that differs with engine speed. Higher speed = greater noise. I used a stethescope to try to track down the noise. It seems to be on the right side near the area where the oil lines exit. Cam chain? oil pump? Any Ideas?
Thanks 2
Did this occur in between maintenance or just after maintenance. I've had issues with whines caused by bad adjustments during maintenance (not on the right side though).
No, It started showing up about 1000 mi. ago and has been getting worse. It almost sounded like a backlash of some sort when I shut it off last itme I started it. I guess I just need to knuckel down and tear it down to find it what the noise is. I think I'll start with the cam stuff.T
Try using a stethoscope or go to basics, if you have a long screw driver place it near where the noise is at and put your ear against the screwdriver. Cheap man's steth......
Sounds like either a cam bearing (probably the rear one as they are usually the first to go), cam chain tensioner, or oil pump. Take the cover off and have a look, then let us know what you find.
try changing your fluids and strain them through a white tee shirt and also see if you got any metal on the drain plug. when you get the oil filter off try cutting an end off it to get to the filter paper and see if this gives you any clues.
orange plastic=cam change tensioners
metal chunks= big problems
a little metal powder on drain plugs maybe normal
