I really would like to have some tunes, don't care for the add on to my RKC, just want to be able to have hours of the tunes I like on a I pod in my pocket and cruise. But I guess I need to hear it from some one else, that it's not good that you can't hear whats around you. What you all think on the matter?[][]
I wear mine about half the time but I cannot hear anything around me even if I do not wear it so I see (or hear) no difference. Except maybe in some ways I find I am actually more aware with it on than off because I actually over compensate if that is possible. I actually find my self getting a little day dreamy some times when just riding along with out one. I do not know if anyone else has that problem?
On long day rides I normally use my MP3 player placed in my pocket. For trips I set up my XM Radio. In both cases I use the EarPlug Company's - Challenger ear buds.
Might be a good idea on a long, lonely stretch of Interstate. But I want all my faculties working most of the time. Riding a motorcycle is a dangerous sport, so reducing the ability to hear what's going on around you is a disability that tilts the odds against you even further than they already are. Hell, iPods are dangerous even if you're a pedestrian. Two days ago a train killed a 13-year-old in my town who was listening to rap on his iPod. He never heard it coming.
I bought my Nano so I could use it on the bike. However, I quickly learned that I can't hear it with the wind running past my ears and the sound of the exhaust. I have to turn it all the way up and then I' scared I'm going to ruin my hearing!
I purchaed an ARCOS MP3 Player on ebay. I like it a lot. Its 15 GB, so it has plenty of space. I think it is a little more rugged than the Ipod. I als0 got a boosteroo amplifier (see boosteroo.com) which I attached to the mp3 player with velcro. Then I got noise cancelling head phones, but found that they don't do a good job trying to compensate for the wind noise. But the headphones themselves do block out enough of the wind noise so I don't have to have it turned up too high. Another thing to consider with the IPod. Without separate buttons, and just the touch pad I would think that it would be very difficult to use with gloves on.
The last thing to think about is where will you keep the MP3 player, in your pocket? I put a couple of pieces of velcro tape on my tank and hold it there when I'm riding. Not to crazy on having the velcro on the tank, but its temporary.
