FYI, bigskyhd - geardrives don't always make audible noise or whine. I've had 3 bikes - 2 Dyna's and a Streetglide - with gear drive setups and no noise from any of them. It is true that the straight cut teeth of the gear drive setup CAN whine (and theoretically always should) it is not an absolute. I do get a small amount of tranny whine, though.
RCopeland1 you may be hearing a heat ping and/or buzz. My bikes almost always do this after shutting down. Another thought I had was the fuel pump running for a moment after you shut down your bike.

My gear drive is as quiet or quieter than the stock chains.

The gear drive on my Fatboy makes a barely audible whine, kind of like a chevy small block w/ gear drive cams, I don't mint it though. The noise doesn't bother me, it's just the sound of reliability. My Road Glide Gear drive setup has a little bit of clicking to it again not enough to worry about. Whine = tight gears / clicking = a little more backlash or looser gears. The gear drive cam setup is a little tricky to setup perfectly and is totally dependent on your crank runout. If you have too much runout you cannot run gears. There should be no noise when the bike is not running, if there is noise it is most likely a bad thing. How do you like the 510g? The guy I bought my RG from had those installed before I bought it. He did no other mods except for a stage1 setup. On my rig this setup is a dog down low and above 4000rpm. It seems to have a very narrow powerband from say 2900 to 4000 rpm. I know its overcammed as the compression needs to be closer to 10:1 for the cam to really work. I'll be doing a top end on this one in the near future fo sho.

Mine whines a bit when it is cold. The top end is dead quiet when it is cold. When it gets hot, the gears quieten and the top end gets noisy....Go figure...I chased the ghosts dealing with the top end noise and never solved the problem. That was 21k miles ago. I just ride it and don't worry about the noise.

Thanks all, You know, I only heard it that one time after coming home from the shop. Im running a carb, and my idle was set too high for one, so when I arrived home and shut it down, I got that weird little noise, hasnt done it since, I adjusted my idle, and you can hear the gears whirring while its running if you stick your head down there, but no whine, should be OK, Shop that did it is pretty reputable here in Denver, so if I have any problems, I'm pretty sure they'll stand behind their work

Good counsel above to check everything else that might have been loosened during the change. Good tip: After shutdown, Take a large screwdriver, hold it in you hand by the handle, put the tip of the blade on where you think the sound is coming from and the end of the handle right in your ear. It will act as a stethoscope, and help you isolate where the sound is coming from. Just move it to different areas until you find what's making the sound. Hope this helps.
+1 completely agree. I have not seen a conversion yet that I cannot hear a hint of gear whine. It is the nature of the beast. Had mine done about 3 years ago and it has a slight audible whine at idle (if you listen close enough). Can't hear a thing cruising.

Victory comes from the factory with gear drive (at least my 2 buds did) and you can hear that whine from 10 feet. Nothing to worry about.

Now the noise you heard after shutdown is not right. Were you coasting?
