Hey all, havent posted in a while, I just had new cams and a gear drive installed yesterday, Andrews 37G and S&S Gear drive, rode home from the shop, bike runs great, they did a great job, as far as I can tell ,cleaned the bike up nicely. My question is, after I got home and shut the bike down, I noticed a kind of ringing, spinning gear noise (duh, right) I'm going to assume that this noise is normal after converting to a gear drive? Anyone else notice this?
I had 2001 and did S&S gears and 510 cams with 95 kit. Gears are great thinking about doing 07 SG. Has anyone done it to the 07 or newer?
Your bike is probably fine. Call you shop tell them, check the exhaust pipes for something loose the whole way and the right foot board.
There is a 1/2" nut or might be philps screw head on yours below the seat right side, holds the two into one pipe buisness solid. Was loose on my freinds made that noise and that 's all is was.
Gears are cool. My 2001 flhrci the cam chain tensioner shoes went at 22,000 miles and cause the bearings on the piston connecting rod to go and other things oil pump, cam plate etc. I then had the motor rebuilt bottom and top, my freind say it still run great 60,000 now.
It absolutely will make more noise WHILE running. That's simply the mechanics of that setup. But there should be no "after shutdown" sounds, particularly in the motor. Good counsel above to check everything else that might have been loosened during the change. Good tip: After shutdown, Take a large screwdriver, hold it in you hand by the handle, put the tip of the blade on where you think the sound is coming from and the end of the handle right in your ear. It will act as a stethoscope, and help you isolate where the sound is coming from. Just move it to different areas until you find what's making the sound. Hope this helps.
