Just got my first Harley, a 2009 Street Glide. Planning a few trips this summer. I have heard a few conflicting opinions from my friends. Does anyone chain lock their bikes overnight while travelling

 

No Why ? A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link and to a thief they are all weak... if they want it, it will be gone. The Harley security system is about as good as it gets IMHO. Now that being said if it makes you feel better by all means do it, it sure can't hurt. Try a disc lock just remember to remove it before you take off.
Good insurance and parking your bike in the right places is the best piece of mind you can get.
Oh and hope your buddy's bike is a little easier to get LOL. Good Luck and Ride Safe.

 

Ditto - I have the factory security on my bike and I added the smart siren II. I have used a disc lock before - that was my only security on my Honda Hurricanes - but I forgot to take it off once and about 2 feet after forward motion had begun - it ended abruptly with me and the bike on the ground!

 

I have the Smart Siren II and Pager maybe more for peace of mind. The siren pager is not very sensitive no false alarms, but I think you could remove items from the bike just not the bike.

All the security in the world won't protect your bike from experienced, determined thieves with bolt cutters & a trailer. If they really want it, they'll take it.

 

There are a lot of good security ideas out there, but here are some I practice and they seem to work for me:

1. Use a cover. Keeps prying eyes away.
2. Lock your forks. That's what it's there for.
3. If you don't have the HD security feature, and you're concerned about security (which you sound like you are), spring for both it and the siren.
4. Park where you can see the bike from your hotel. Avoid hotels where this isn't possible unless your parking area is secure.

I use the HD security and Siren. I have a pager also, which did not add much to the overall security.

I am installing locks on my luggage this year.

Nothing is perfect, but I figure if you slow them down a little it may help.

Beyond that, insurance!

 

Cover, ROADLOK disk lock, security alarm, siren, pager, fork lock and when poss. chain to tree or pole. If they want it....they will take it....I just want them to work for it.
