Cool SEST sharing?????

So I hear the SEST is a POS from the dealer.
Then I learn that a great many people are happy with it and are recommending it.
Then I hear it is just cables and a program that you hook up to the bike. Having not seen nor read the directions, what's the deal?

If there is no unit to leave on the bike, do the cables that you have to install stay on the bike? I was thinking and it appears that you can share the new SEST with a riding partner. I haven't asked HD but what stays on the bike?
If nothing can you share it???

I believe the SEST is linked to your specific bike by VIN and can only be used on that particular bike and can't be shared or removed to sell or transferred to another bike you purchase. The cables and software are a seperate purchase.

Generally speaking, the SEST is hooked up to the bikes ECM with a cable. Then, with the use of a PC, a new map is loaded. When done, no cables remain attached. That's the beauty of it. Basically, your using it to download a "program" to the bikes computer vs and add-on that others offer.

You can NOT share this with another bike as once it is used, it's "married" to the first bike hooked up to.

almost all "handheld" programmers/tuners are designed to be VIN-locked/married to the vehicle. many have tried to hack it but have not heard of anyone who has succeeded.

pretty sure some computer wizards have already done it but due to liaiblity reasons, are smart enough to keep quiet about it/not talk about it in an open forum.

It's not the software that locks to the VIN. It's the serial interface that marries to the VIN that's been programmed in to the ECM.

Is it like the tuners for cars/trucks once you put your stock ecm tune back in the bike is the tuner ok to use on another? I know that with most car ones thats the case.

No, it locks onto the VIN and can not be reset. As said earlier there must be a way to crack this.

The SEST is just a communications cable joiner. It would cost about $4 to make and costs $400. This is why it needs to lock to VINs.

I use a handheld tuner for my truck (DIABLO Predator), it is unlocked by reloading the stock tune and can then be used for a similar vehicle to which it is VIN-locked again.
