Question Installing Apes? Expensive?

Thinking of putting some 12.5's on my bike and I'm somewhat familiar with a wrench but a little nervous about swapping out my own bars. How expensive you think it would run? Thanks fellas!!

Cost me a little over a grand in parts; 14" W1s, cables, brake lines, wire ext, switch housings, chrome levers, new grips, etc.

Took me about about 6 hrs taking my time, splicing wires, swicthing out housing, bleeding brakes, etc. Not a hard job, just takes alittle patience and time. I would think HD would hit ya for around the same hrs.

Do it yourself and use the labor $$ to pay for some of the parts.

You can get bar and cable packages on eBay that will save you some money. They even have Wild 1 bars in some of the packages. Doing the installation yourself will save a lot, too. If you're moderately mechanical, you can do it. It just takes a while. If you have any hang ups just make a post here and we'll get you through it.

Doing the bars is the easy part, and the cheap part. It's all the new clutch cable, brake lines, throttle cables, and extended wires that add up to the cost big time. A friend of mine just put apes on his Street Glide and he said it cost him about $1000 when it was all done.

Tom here. If you are interested in seeing what has to be done and why it costs so much, see this link. http://www.harleyhog.co.uk/photos/my.../rkbarswap.pdf

I did 13" Cyclesmith myself and saved a bundle from the stealers.Cost me about 450 bux for bars, cables and throttle in stainless braid. Already had chrome controls. If you don't go higher than 13", you want need wire extenions, just rerout the wires under the radio and they'll be fine. A service manual is almost a must. Take pics with your digital camera and make diagrams for when you go back together on the plugs. all the wires are color coded, TAKE NOTES.After 5-6-7-8 hrs, however long it takes you'll forget where all the wires go. A couple six packs doesn't hurt either. You will enjoy the results afterwards,1 for how it feels and 2nd for doing it yourself.

What's wrong with the ignition switch?

It's just a small button on the bottom, turn it with the key in and push the button and off it comes.......it's all right in the service manual.
