Got the oil changed today, but no test ride yet so, I don't know if it is fixed or not. It won't stop raining long enough to get a ride in. As soon as I can get a chance to ride I'll have more info. I did check the swingarm, it didn't seem to have any play in it.
Thanks caveman for the info. The shock oil wasn't hard to change at all.
This thread is nearly on par with a question that I was logging on to ask for a buddy of mine. He has a '98 Wide Glide. When he hits the back brakes hard by themselves, or front and back hard while carrying a passenger, he gets a hard hit under him like... like the engine is coming off the mounts.
He has the shocks sit to their most firm and the motor mounts seem good just from inspection.
Took the scoot out today. I had 10 psi in the rear and it rode like a new bike. I'm going for a ride with the wife this weekend so I'll see how it does.
Thanks again for all the info everybody!!
Bitter Creek,
You may try to pm capt caveman and ask him about your buddy's bike.

MTLake,
Glad to hear the bike is riding better. I was absolutely amazed at the ride difference I had when I changed my shock oil. Let us know how your wife like the ride change.
Bitter Creek,
I don't know much about the older Wide Glides. If it has air shocks it would be an inexpensive experiment to see if it resolves the issue. I'm not expert but I have never seen anything about working on non-air shocks.
So far no thumping sound, and the ride is more like it was before the bike was wrecked. I'll ride this weekend and if everything seems ok, I'll put my lowering blocks back on and see what happens.
My bike is a 1990 Evo, except I recently fitted an S&S with new engine mounts, True-Track swingarm solid bushes and handling kit. Everything is new, as well as Fournales high pressure rear air shocks (running at 155 psi), plus larger section 140/90 rear tyre (Avon Venoms both ends).
The bike handles great and we just got back from a 2,500 mile tour from the UK to Slovakia. But despite all the new stuff, my 'old lady' still occasionally thumps when hitting a bump or pothole. We ride fully laden at around 1200 pounds and I run 44psi front and 50psi rear. So I am also interested in the answer!
It really does sound as if something solid is hitting something else solid, but I can find no obvious cause of this. I have even considered fitting longer than standard rear shocks, to get a bit more suspension travel.
Can anyone shine a light on this thump?! Let's keep this alive until we get to the bottom of it (ouch.... )
