I dont know the exact differences between the two kits, but I know if you are going to do the work, the drop in is the way to go. I installed one on my RK this spring and it was really easy. No seals to mess with, just swap out the spring and add a spacer if desired. The whole process took about an hour.
Ride is not any stiffer or softer that I can tell. I have bottomed it out a couple of times, although I think I would have bottomed out the stock springs on those occasions. We have the worst roads here in Michigan. You can lower it 2 inches with the drop in kit. I dropped it 2" to start and the nose looked lower than the rear and I didnt like the look so I added a 1" spacer. The rear of my bike is also lowered 2 inches. Overall I am very happy with the kit. I bought it on ebay for $115 +/- so it was about the same price as HD's kit but I was able to do the install myself.
the 1" spacer comes with the package? (i mean do i have 2 options with this kit) because the cruise conrol lower kit comes with parts that lower the bike 1" and 2", so you have 2 options.
Yes the spacer comes with the kit. It is actually a hard plastic piece that you can cut to any length you want. No spacer = 2" drop or so they say, seemed like more than that to me, or add a spacer of any length you decide.
I put in the progressive spring kit...dropped it 2"...also lowered the rear about 2 1/2"....haven't bottomed out the front end yet....occasionally the rear riding 2-up and low pressure in the shocks...all in all I'm really happy with not only the looks of the bike..but the ride is great too! JMO
After doing a bit of research...the drop in kit doesn't require you to remove your front forks or even the front wheel...heres a video that might explain the drop in kit....I hope I pasted it in properly.....hope this helps!
the html didn't work.....go to google and and type in progressive springs drop in.....then click on the 3rd result....Progressive Suspension Drop In Fork Lowering Kit at Cyril Huze Blog....nice little video about the drop in kit.
