Default re-using grips

Hi-

I want to swap out the bars on my ride, but I really like my grips (that are less than a year old) so I want to re-use them..

Can anyone tell me the best procedure for getting the left grip off and re-mounting?

I'm using Avon grips on an '09 Street Glide and switching to new bars..

Thanks!

Right side will be no issue

Left side will be a crap shoot. I was able to reuse when I swapped bars on previous bike but I took my time on the left side.

I straightened a paper clip, slid it under the grip and very slowly and patiently worked it all the way around to loosen the glue.

I have seen where others had to actually cut the grip to get it off.

yeah, I had to cut the original grip off the bar, but this grip has a plastic (PVC?)sleeve.. (not that I want to cut it anyway, though )

Take your time, you should be able to reuse it. If you mess it up, just remember what kind of grips you had, and buy new ones.

The paper clip or small screwdriver to raise it up a little and a shot of WD-40. Wait a few minutes and see what happens. A little twist or two and it should come right off.

Smile Re-using grips

Once you remove the bars, heat up water in a pan (don't need boiling water, just hot) and soak the grip for a minute, then wrap it in a shop rag and twist it back and forth, the glue will loosen up and the grip will come right off.

If you intend to use the same glue on the grip, just stick it into the new bars right away, as the glue cools down, it will set in the new bars. I have done this three times and I have not needed new glue yet.

I hope this helps.

Here is something that works for me. Take a straight piece of stiff wire, like from a clothes hanger. Cut it just a little longer than the grip and bend like a little crank handle on it. Carefully work it under the grip and then rotate the little crank. The wire will work its way around the bar breaking the glue as it goes. After a couple of rounds pull the grip right off.
