I have a 07 ultra and really like it. Bought it new in May of 07 and have 35,000 miles on it.
If I were looking for a Ultra now knowing what I know now I would be looking at a 06.
If power is important do a 95 inch kit and you will either run with a 96 or leave them behind you. Better mpg. 2 up is not a problem and you will save some $$$ in price difference.
Just my thoughts
I have an 07 and I haven't had any problems other than the heat when it was stock. Exhaust, a good air cleaner, and a programmer took care of that. I don't know what these issues are that you are worried about but I would take it with a grain of salt. You usually hear more about problems on these forums than you do when things are good.
I'm starting to feel a little better in my gut instinct on the choosing the 06' model year. These forums are great.
you should have checked the classifieds...I just sold my 06 Ultra yesterday. I had it in the classifieds for a few days.....too bad you didn't see it....
2009 is the best year for harley. 06 does not have the engine, frame and alot of other stuff. Buy what you can afford and don't make excuses for what you can not afford.
I have had 2004 roadking and went to a 2007 ultra put 29000 miles on ultra and now have just traded for a 2010 ultra limited if I was you I would look for a 2009 ultra low miles and you will be very happy with the ride, wide rear tire, new frame, radio & cb are very nice, you ask so here you go, good luck,
I bought a 07 Ultra in Sept of 06. So I am biased. I love the bike. 20,000 miles on it absolutely No problems other than stock heat issues. Had ISO, Stage1 and Sert with Rush slip ons put on. Cooled down and rans great. I went back to stock mufflers because I thought the Rush were too loud. Probably should had put different baffels in the Rush. It does have minor heat issues again but not a problem. Don't be afraid of the 07. Ask the happy owners of them Good Luck.
I've seen a couple of left over 08's if you want to go that late model year. I've been happy with mine except for the initial issue with engine heat. True duals solved that. I really like the 96 motor and the 6 speed. My last HD was a 2001 RG, and I always found myself wishing for one more gear and just a little more uumph which I got with the 08.
I have a 06 Ultra and it has been great! I've added about 28,000 miles to the 5,000 that was on it when I bought it. My 88 seems to pull about as good as the 96s do (I keep up fine when riding with newer 96s).
The 5 speed tranny is fine. From what I've been told the 6th gear isn't used much unless you do a lot of riding above 65 mph.
True for the '07 6 speed(which I own). I think the gearing was changed in the '09 & '10(not sure about '08) to make 6th a little friendlier to use.
