Does anyone know if we have to use the HD XM module that cost $500 to get XM radio on the new bikes? I am hoping that this radio is considered XM ready and all I need to do is buy one of the other XM module option that are much cheaper.

Ed,
The only way I know of to get XM through the HD radio is with the HD module. The other XM modules you are talking about are external and would be a seperate unit mounted somewhere and plugged in through your MP3 port on radio. I know the HD module is expensive but for me it is worth it. Everything is done through the radio controls this way.
I have harleys XM module and once you get past the cost it is the best option as far as ease of operation, visually seeing your choice of station, and being able to completely operate the module via your handlebar controls.Any outher XM module will be like adding one to your automobile.
I went the same way with mine. I got a HD module off e-bay and had to get the wiring harness from HD to hook it up. It might have been cheaper to go another route, like Kenwood or Alpine head unit with satellite radio built in. Would still have to get one of the install packages to mount the head unit and then something to make the handlebar controls still work. At the time, the HD module seemed to be the easiest way to go.
have you had any issues with the HD XM. i an getting tired of my mp3 disk and the radio. thanks. ted
No issues with the xm module, works well. The volume is not as loud as CD or radio though. I am still getting my system tweaked, waiting on 6.5 speakers now.

That is right, the volume is not as loud as CD or radio. That is weird, I wonder why that is?
If it was I wouldn't have been so desperate to get an amp.
