Got to agree with staying with the HD filters. Have just heard so much over time about their quality.

IMOP K&N also very good Filter just like MoCo and Wix but are less restictive, and it lets more oil flow when cold because of the bypass spring.

I would much rather use the appropriate oil for the temps than have the filter by-pass when cold.

I have to agree with barren, good oil and filter changed regularly you will most likely not have a failure. I do know of some local roundy rounders that lost engines due to Fram's cardboard end caps coming apart and plugging oil passages during a race. you will not catch me running a Fram unless I am absolutely desperate.

i can tell you from experience we ran our heavy equipment harder than any HD rider would ever experience and no failures of the engines or the filters. we also routinely sent samples of oil to http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ for testing again no issues.
buy whatever filter you feel comfortable with all i'm saying is Wix makes one of if not the best filters on the market.
+1 on Wix filters. Wix and Napa Gold are the exact same filters and if you go thru Napa, you can get a #PS7348 (chrome) or a PS1348 (black). They are under their PowerSport line (made by Wix).

Many of harleys filters are made by wix also. Used to have a list, but lost it.
also HD can not void a warranty, because you did not use their filter. As long as the filter meets or exceeds their specifications. (been there done that and won).
I upgraded my oil pump this year, now have about 15 psi at idle warm, compared to the measly 5 or so with HD's pump, and 40psi, cruising when warm.
I feel better.

Harley filters are Purolator which is good. I get my WIX from the parts house a couple of blocks from my house. Much better price than H-D and i have no use for a Chrome filter. a black filter radiates heat whereas a chrome one doesn't as well.

I know this thread is old, but on the NAPA site I only see 1348 and not PS1348.

Question (for anyone): are the 1348 and PS1348 the same filter?

Edit to add: called local NAPA, they said part# PS1348 is obsolete (?) but he suggested (?) its the same as the 1348?

I ask as this filter is significantly cheaper then the WIX 57148 which many cross-ref over to NAPA Gold filters.

I usually buy 2. Blk HD brand. Under $10 ea at the Livermore dealer
One time, I held the Drag Spec Fltr & an HD fltr. You could tell the difference.
HD filter heavier.

On that note, I found out recently, Livermore Harley sold. The owners of Eagles Nest
in Lathrop bought em. They're the heavy hitters in this area.

(Not that it means much to anyone over 50 mi from here - Ha ha !!!)

I recently read that NAPA Gold are WIx and the other lesser levels are not.... I could not confirm that info...

FWIW....
I have been a fan of WIX filters for years, they are perennially one of the better filters out there..

However, several years ago, I was reading about issues with the K&N oil filters. Apparently they switched their oil filter manufacturer, and some quality control issues followed. I researched and found the original K&N filter, with the 17mm nut on the end, was made by Hiflo Filtro. They are one of the biggest international PowerSports filter manufacturers, and the first to earn TUV certification...

Since that time I have been using the HIflo Filtro HF171RC filters for my Harleys. The "RC" is the "race chrome" filter. The "race" filters have the 17mm nut on the end.. You can also get them in black instead of chrome and/or without the 17mm nut.

The Hiflo Filtro HF171 is a replacement for the HD #63798-99, #63731-99, #63731-99A, & #62700296.
