So I'm not going to waste my money on the 5K service but I'm planning on at least changing the fluids. Should I worry about the other fluids or just do an oil change?
im hopeing the weather gets shitty so i can put off my 5000 service least till xmas. then ill get the service manual and the stuff to do it myself. but the way the weather has been so far...its gonna be hard not to ride
Well if your going to do the oil it will not be that much more to change the trans and primary fluids as well.
Just got my service manual Friday and have been reading up on the 5K service since I also plan on doing it myself. Best $48.00 I've spent on the Harley yet.
There a some videos on youtube that will show you just how easy it is to do all three fluids and how simple it is to adjust your clutch pack. Just do a search on Harley DIY and you'll see.

I would change all three fluids (engine, trans and primary) every year regardless of mileage. I have always done that with both big twin bikes I have had and its only a few bucks extra to do the transmission and primary. Also, when you have the derby cover off to refill the primary, it gives you a chance to do a proper clutch adjustment which should also be done every year. For both the trans and primary you only need a little over 2 quarts of Syn3 oil so it is cheap to keep these drive systems in excellent condition.
Personally, I would never let the engine get much beyond 3000 miles between oil changes, unless you are on a long trip that is over that distance. You would be amazed how new looking the inside of an engine will stay with regular oil and filter changes at 3000 miles. May cost a bit more but the engine will virtually last forever.
Do all three youself and have the peace of mind that it's done right. I use Amsoil, 20-50 in crank and primary and 75-140 Severe Gear in the Tranny. Any name brand synthetic should be fine.
I personally think those are extremes, you definitely don't want to go longer than that. I like to change my oils at about HALF the recommended intervals but it's like they say, clean oil is better than dirty oil and dirty oil is better than no oil.
