Default Back Surgery

Well I'm going in for Back Surgery on April 8th, 2 level fusion at L4/L5 and L5/S1 (a hot-shot Vegas Doc). Gonna go for a couple of short rides before then, yank the seat to get it to MCC by my 3/30 scheduled date, and hopefully get the Fullsac treatment while I recover. I will be rolling to the Laughlin River Run in the Cager, but hopefully back on the Scoot in June!

I feel for you bro. I've had the L4-L5 fusion and a C5-C6 fusion (along with some other neck work). I need another fusion at C6-C7, but I'm putting that off as long as I can. It's been over 10 years since I've had the lower back work, so don't remember exactly how long I was supposed to not ride, but as I recall, it was a few months before I could do more than just a few miles. Lots of people will tell you.... go slow. Fortunately, it's a fairly commonplace surgery, and you'll likely be feeling lots better immediately after surgery.

Good luck, let us know how it goes. You'll have lots of time to check in on the forum.

I just had L4 L5 S1 fused with 6 screws,2rods and 2 spacers on Feb 23,10. I was told I can`t ride for three months. The surgery went well and I can walk pretty good. The problem I have now is I can`t lay down in bed to sleep because the Piraformis muscle in my butt is putting pressure on the Sciatic nerve causing severe pain from my knee to my ankle on my right leg. It keeps me up all night because of the pain. I researched it on the internet and they say you have to streach the Piraformis muscle. It hasnt worked so far. The strange thing is the pain is gone during the day and I can walk pain free. Anyone else had this problem ? Good luck with your operation. Give an update after your surgery

I had L3-4-5 fused 3 years ago with the screws/rods/spacer deals at Shephard Center in Atlanta. I have had good results, my ride time was totally related to the "Oxycontin" intake!!! Kinda kidding, but it did take a while for my body to adjust to the metal parts in my back (sore as HELL). I'll never forget the first time (next morning) they MADE me walk down the hall. Good Luck, God Bless

I just had surgery in December to repair a herinated disc. I have two degenerative disc and the doc wanted to fuse L5/S1. I refused as I am 32 and understand that once the disc is fused it will add extra pressure to the discs above it. I have too many years to go so I figured I would deal with it. Since returning to work, I drove 3 16 hrs shifts in a truck without any pain, some discomfort and tightness, but no pain! I can feel a pinch every now and then from the disc, but its tolerable. The doc gave me the OK to ride on friday but it has been raining since.

Good luck with your surgery and God Bless!

L5/S1 dosen't move anyway, so fusing it isn't that big of a deal, it just takes preasure off the nerve. Fusing the L4/L5 will put additional strain on the L3/L4 disc, but I'll just have to re-think the way I do things involving my back.

Thanks for all the well wishes, will keep you all posted.

Pain shooting from my but down my legs, but I could live with that. Numbness, from nerve damage, in both legs. Gotta get the pressure off the nerve to avoid permenent damage. I used to be able to walk my *** off (just last year) but now, after an hour or 2 on my feet I can hardly walk.

my wife had similar fusion and the pain is severe... the question is are they going in from the front or the rear? My wife was told sometime they are able to go in through the front and the healing time is quicker due to less muscle being cut to get to the spine. Her recovery time was long although the fusion is strong... so hopefully you have the same results!
