I'm having this dilemma right now too. So many shocks out there and so many self proclaim experts on here about shocks. These threads usually end as an internet pissing match.
Anyway, there is Progressive...they have a wide range of shocks. They have some that start at about $200+ (412) and go up to $600+ (440 & 940). Each you can get a heavy duty spring depending on the load of the bike.
Then, there are Suspension Technology (which I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on). They have a nice little following on one of the other forums. I'll let you look decide on them. http://www.suspensiontechnologies.com/products.htm
Next you have Ohlins, Penske, Ricor, and Bitubo. All high end stuff with the price to match. There is a sponsor on here that I think can get you an Ohlin set for about $450...can't remember if that is accurate.
The Bitubos really got my attention too being that I come from riding sport bikes.
Good luck on your decision.
***Also, I don't want to leave out Works Suspension.

Call Howard at motorcycle metal. He is a sponsor and member of this forum. He was very helpful to me and lots of others here. You tell him what you want and what you are willing to spend and he'll set you up.
We will be setup with suspension technologies later today so we will be able to provide their products at a discounted rate. If you need pricing info PM me please. Drew
I spent months agonising over this question! I had already replaced my original shocks and while the new ones were better than stock, they did not give a good ride when we were 2-up. You will find plenty of HDFers who will say they are happy with Brand X, from a list of usual suspects, but a few others who have tried several options and are still not happy.
This a long way of saying you have a choice to make! If you don't spend much you may not be happy with what you buy and want to try something else. Or you can jump over all the Brand X shocks and do as Dennis above suggests and phone Howard, who will explain the options he can offer you and give you a HDF discount for superior shocks!

I couldn't tell much from their website. Maybe you can answer a couple of questions.
Is there a choice of springs or do they set the shock up with your weight?
Do they tune them for your riding style such as sport riding (stiffer) or cruiser riding?

Are they rebuildable?
Thanks in advance.
I'm not sure. That's why I stated thinking about pulling the trigger. I have a few questions too. But, they are at least $200 cheaper than any other shocks I'm excited about.

Got some more info. You can special order a springs. Adjustable preload (by hand), but I'm sure you saw that. And, they carry lifetime warranty...the end user can not rebuild, must send them in.
Thanks Brypink. I'm looking forward to hearing some reviews by folks who have them.
It's always good to have lots of options and there are a bunch. Btw; you left out Ikon's. I haven't tried them but there are forum members here who like them a lot. They too are rebuildable. From what I could find out about the Bitubo's there isn't much in the way of USA support so I'd check that off my list.
