Default Really Frustrated

Well after a long winter this was supposed to be the weekend that she was all back together and ridable. I have a 09 FLHX that got a complete makeover this winter.

We pulled the motor and tranny so it could be painted. While it was off I had it diamond cut and had the heads done by GMS. New cam, Inner primary, chrome lowers, painted inner fairing, painted lower fairings, wheels, rotors, and starter and i thought I was done.

When we put the finishing touches on her Friday night, she fired right up but with no oil pressure. A few more attempts and nothing. Pulled the filter and found no oil. Raised her back up and found a puddle under the bike. Reached up under and found oil leaking from where the tranny case bolts up to the engine case. We removed the inner and outer primary, loosened the belt, unbolted the swingarm, and unbolted the tranny. The cometic gasket that we put in had slipped. The Harley gasket has little rubber nubs that hold it in place on the tranny. The Cometic one does not so we had used a little silicone to hold it in place. Obviously that didnt work. Saturday morning went and got a new Harley gasket and soem more oil.

Yesterday morning we slapped her back in and got her all back together. Now mind you when we split the tranny from the engine case we did a bonehead move and didnt drain the oil. I dont know what we were thinking but after a bundle of shop towels and a roll of paper towels we had her cleaned up. Oil was everywhere underneath and I didnt do a great job of cleaning it up. It started right up in the afternoon and I took it for a short ride for some gas. I then went home to show my parents and when i parked in the drive It started to drip oil. I thought oh that is no big deal I had oil all over the place and when the motor got hot, that oil is gonna drip off.

Got her home, detailed the heck out of her, made my underside look like ULTRA KLA$$ICS and thought I was good to go. This morning I went out and checked her and she had a spot waiting to drip coming from the same spot (tranny to engine). I talked to one of the guys who has been helping me all winter and he said that it might take a couple rides for all the oil to get out of where it wasnt supposed to be. Do you all agree? Have any of you ever had that problem? This is my first bike, so I am still a little green but I have expierence all around me. It is riding time here in Northeast Ohio and as you know it doesnt last long. I dont want to be in the garage any longer i just want to get her tuned up then ride her.

Any help is much appreciated.

I'd keep an eye on it and take some short rides. I had this problem once after an oil change (dripping oil) it lasted for a week. Oil can be tricky when it is hidden in places you cannot clean. Good luck with the build and mods, sounds like an awesome ride! We NEED pictures!

I had a big mess underneath the wifes scoot not long ago. Detailed every nook and cranny I could find anyway I could. Rolled paper towels up tight, q-tips, etc. Took 3 cleans with rides in between before it quit coming out of who-knows-where.

If it is one drip barely and you can't see it directly from the tranny/engine seal, I would keep cleaning, riding and keeping a close eye on it. My $0.02 anyway.

Agree with the posts so far.
One thing you can do is clean it again and then dust the area with baby powder, it will make it easier to see where the oil is coming from.

The crossmember on the frames of the newer touring models like to hold oil.
