My buddy experienced the famous bagger wobble on a left sweeper at 70 mph this past weekend. Crazy thing is, he's riding a 2010 Ultra Classic!!! I thought the new frame was supposed to correct this...tire pressures were fine and the bike doesn't even have 10k on it yet.
Did he have the upper fairing vents open??? My '08 Ultra buffets like crazy above 70mph with the vents open. Damn near lost it on the interstate last year and couldn't figure out what was causing the wobble 'til I got home and remembered I had opened the vents. Closed them up and took another 10 mile ride on the interstate 70-80mph no problem.
How squared off is his rear tire? I've got a little more than 15k on my 2010 Limited, and the past 1-2K miles I noticed that I didn't have the same rock-solid feel on sweeping turns at 70-80 mph, not a bad wobble, but didn't feel as hooked up. My rear tire was really starting to get squared off. I ride a lot of highway miles, and can't get enough twistied in to even out the tire wear.
I took it in earlier this week for the 15K service, and told them I wanted to put a new rear on at the same time. It had plenty of tread left on it..probably could have gotten another 2-3K out of it. But I'll be putting that many miles on it the next 2-3 weeks, and it wasn't worth the inconvenience. It made a tremendous difference! Feels like I'm riding a new bike.
