Does anyone know about the new Paint Exchange Program that is shown in the new accessory catalog? They never used to paint the fiberglass/nylon parts before. Just wondering if I could buy a new Street Glide in Black, and send all of the parts to Harley and have them paint the bike for me in a different color? Any one heard of this or know? Thanks!

What do you mean fiberglass/nylon?

They give a price for all parts, yours would be a 10 piece with the fairing. Rememebr, if you buy your bike then you must pay for the dealer to disassemble the rig, ship it to HD, then they will charge something like almost $100 per piece to strip, then $70 to fix anything that's dented, etc...it's almost cheaper to buy all new tins, and go with their paint program, That ways there no time lost on having a bike with no tins.

All new 9 piece tins in primer for a Road King is about $2700, not sure what your fairing costs.

Essentially, you can go with any color combo dating back to '79 or custom. It may be cheaper to find a local painter though. Maybe not, HD's prices are not bad.

 

the way i read it, there is 2 options. you buy the paint set, and send in your old tins in exchange for the new ones. one for one exchange. if the set you buy has bags, then you include your bags.

or you can have your 'undamaged' tins painted and sent back. though it looks like not all the paint schemes have this option.



seems to be a pretty pricey option (5,295.95 for the 'free ride' design for the flhx), but i don't see why you couldn't trade your black stuff (and some $$$) for the blingy new paint set

 

You can do either, or buy new tins, so theres very little down time.

 

Thanks for the advise. By fiberglass/nylon, I meant that previously HD would not paint any body parts that were not metal, such as the saddlebags (this is for a custom color, not stock). What I'm looking at is will HD now paint my entire bike by exchange AND not have to go with their special paint sets they are showing? In other words, if I take all of my parts off and send to HD, will they now be willing to paint the ENTIRE bike in a custom color of my choosing (not one of the special sets they show)? I know I can get a local painter to do it, but I've had Harley paint my tanks and fenders before they they always match and had NO issues with the paint (unlike when using ANY of the local painters I've used in the past, LOL).

Yeah, if you look in the P&A catalog, their description with the pics is a little mis-leading. They show pics of special run paint sets, then a few pics of gas tanks with different paint colors and inset panels, etc...

They claim you can go with any stock color combo from '79 up, OR any custom color combo you want. So yeah, you should be able to do what you were saying. Some parts guys at dealerships have no idea about this. I asked one yesterday and he tried to tell me to go to a local painter. I may call the MoCo to inquire more, I'm thinking of getting new tins and doing a 2008 color but I want birch white saddle bags. Their prices aren't bad, if I can pull off what I want, LOL.

 

Same goes for the graphics. You can get any graphic on the tins as long as it isn't a 100th anniversary or something like that. They do reserve the right to refuse a custom color combo, but it has to be a pretty outlandish combination before they refuse to do it.

What details? I was given a big book with all the graphics in it and they told me to pick one. There were charts to pick the color from, and then I picked the pinstriping to go with it. After picking the 2 colors for the pinstriping I had to say if I wanted the burgandy over the silver or the silver over the burgandy. It took about 8 weeks to get everything back. I wasn't going for 2 tone although I could have. The 2 tone procedure was basically the same as picking the pinstriping. What 2 colors do you want and which is the base and which is the accent. I do know a guy that did it with a Heritage and he got 2 tone. Vivid black base with black pearl accent. Sounds a bit different, but it really looked great and I haven't seen any other Harleys with that combo.
