I am also 5'9" and replaced my stock SG shield. I picked up a 7" shield from Freedom Shields: http://www.freedomshields.net/ . The fit and finish are excellet. It took care of almost all of the buffeting. I would definately buy this shield again.
there's many factors involved in windshield selection, unfortunately finding the right shield for most of us have involved the purchase of a shield or two(?) before finding the right one. I started out with a 8'" clearview recurve (too tall) which was replaced with a 6.5" clearview recurve which I use for trips & cold weather. For running around on the two lanes below 65mph in warm weather I prefer the stock 4" on my SG.
Like Texas Fat Boy, I have tried about 10 windshields. At just under 6', these are the ones I liked the best. I ride with a helmet.
Best for me is this in 13.5"; http://www.ceebaileys.com/harley/flhtssc_ws.html
Then the 8.5" Klock Werks or the 9.5" Clearview recurve.
The Cee Bailey's does the best at speed. I look over the top of all of these, but can see thru the Cee Baileys and Clearview if I tuck in behind it when the rain gets nasty.
if you go with a clearview shield you can install it and take it for a ride and return it if it's not right, as long as you leave the protective wrapping on.
