I upgrade all 4 speakers and love em.
Good Luck.
I am not sure what they sold you but, you need a speaker with a decent size voice coil to handle the necessary excursion for bass response and volume needed to overpower the road noise you encounter on a bike.
Boston Acoustics makes a 5 1/4 speaker with a 1" - 2" voice coil depending on the price. The SR55's work very well, a little on the high side but they jam. A small 4 channel amp that is not a cheap chip amp will power them real nice. Kenwood & JL make some real nice sounding and performing ones.
Sounds like you're over working your speakers and clipping your amp/radio/system.
Good luck, any other question feel free to ask (I am in the stereo biz here in StL, since 1984 have done many bikes)

It all comes down to the quality of the music you downloaded to your IPod in the first place. If you record it in low quality in order to fit more songs on it that's your problem. You are just hearing the imperfections in the music quality itself. Put a store-bought c.d. in the system and listen to it. If that sounds good, the quality of the music on your IPod is just bad. This system will also let you hear all of the imperfections in FM music as well.
One other thing that it could be is, I don't know when you bought your amp from them, as they've just recently changed the appearance of the amp (supposedly it's the same electronically though), and another forum member posted a picture of his. In his picture the gain controls were exposed and we have a tendancy to mess with them. When I got mine, the gain controls were covered with a J & M sticker so I didn't mess with them and mine sounds fine. But if you've messed with your gain controls that could be a factor as well.
My stereo sounds best when playing c.d.'s because the quality of them is better than FM frequencies or IPod recordings. It's just that these speakers and amp have enough fidelity that you're going to hear more of the imperfections in the music you're playing.

Oh, and by the way, if there is something wrong with your unit, don't worry. I blew one of my speakers, called Dr. VTwin, they said mail it to J & M, which I did. They mailed me a new one in less than a week. Good customer service from both Dr. and J & M.
