Which setup carries more gear, tourpak or sissy bar?

Well, I'd say the Tour-Pak with a luggage rack on top. That way you could fill the Pak and put a bag on the top.

my last big trip, tent camping on an older bike ( so lots of tools), 7000 miles, 3 weeks

33 pounds each saddlebag
T bag ( the big one) on the pass seat ( makes nice backrest)
tourpak with daily stuff, jacket, snacks toiletries, helmet etc.
tourpak rack with SAC bag for sleeping bag, and tent strapped on as well.

total luggage weight about 125 pounds

Tour-pack is rated at 25 lbs (including inside and lid load) - I know we've all gone way over that, but it seems to me a well mounted sissy bar rack would be rated to hold well more than 25 lbs.

It will all depend on what you are trying to carry. This is what i use when the wife goes with me on trips. It's made by T-Bags and is very well made. I like it because i don't like the looks of the luggage rack and makes it harder to clean and wax the lid on the tourpack. It holds everything she wants to take and frees up the rest of the compartments for other things. It comes off very easy and has never moved going down the highway. It does take some time to put on the first time. If you are going to use a sissy bar you will still have to buy a bag of some kind look at the T-Bags they are really well made. This may not be the answer for your paticular case but it's just another option.

I borrowed my buddy's T-Bag Lonestar one time and really liked it. Together with the roll top it is approximately two cubic inches smaller than the king tour pack and it has enough straps to make it real secure. It had plenty of room for me and the wife to pack enough for a 4 day trip (even with extra shoes, her makeup, hair dryer, etc.) and I think they make an ever bigger one than that, which would probably put it over the king pack size. Another bonus: it's around $900 less and you can take it off and use it like a suitcase. I still would like to get the king pack one day, but the sissy bar bag keeps it on the back burner of my wants list.

I've been eyeing that setup since it came out. same reason - don't want to put a luggage rack on. Any damage to the paint using it?

Newer (09+) tour packs carry 30 lbs.
