All this talk inspired me to do an oil change today. With 2560 miles it was due. In Florida, with the hot weather, I don't think changing every 2500 miles is out of line. I let the dealer do the 1, 5, and 10K service because I'm not a mechanic and I trust the techs to properly maintain the bike. I will learn how to do the tranny and primary on my own and get away from SYN3 in those holes. Also, I'm going to send out this oil sample to Blackstone to get a read on the engine. With 12,600 miles it's well broken in and should show good wear....I hope.

for good maintenance 3 months or 3000 miles, which ever comes first. Your oil filter is only good for 2500 miles and the maker says that. Short hops are the worst driving conditions. It takes about 30 miles to bring the engine up to operating temperature. What's a few dollars spent on a $20,000 investment to maintain it?

Ok, I have to ask, where does it say that?

OK, that's a nice offer. But would you let me practice on your bike? Seriously, I would like to do more, but I live in perpetual fear that I will damage something which will cause something else to break which will have me towed to the dealer where the tech wil be shaking his head saying "see, you should have let us do it".

I replaced the shocks on my wife's Sportster. Asked around on another site how to do it. Worked out pretty good, except did not use a torque wrench (mine wouldn't take the "torx" style drive"). Now, For you, shocks may be a walk in the park. For me, I just modified and replaced a MAJOR suspension component, on my WIFE'S bike! Did I tighten the bolts enough? Too much? If so did I crack or weaken the mount? Trust me when I tell you....I look at and check those shock mounts every time I ride with her...Because I am not a mechanic and am not confident in my ability's and would feel horrible if she got injured cause I was trying to save some money and learn a new skill.

I will do some more work on my own and I will utilize the site to seek advice and instructions. But you know as well as me...you just don't want some people touching your bike....Maybe me!

Yes, Vermont chapter. And yes, point taken on the service, I feel a great emotion when I have accomplished something that I would have never otherwise dreamed of. I usually read, study, look at pictures, manuals, etc. on any job that I plan on undertaking so that I understand prior to wrenching on it. Then once I wrenched on it, I find that it wasn't that hard and then I have a BEER
